The objective of this book is to present a concise reference for dentists concerned with the dental treatment of medically, physically, mentally, and emotionally handicapped children. It concerns itself with both pertinent medical and dental information required before treatment of this type of patient is undertaken. The materials is well presented, and the binding and printing are well done. The illustrations are poorly located in the book and do not contribute to the reader's understanding of the subject athe are supposed to represent. The subjects included in the book are hemostatic, metabolic, nephritie, cardiac, and respiratory disorders. Also included are discussions of cerebral palsy, mental retardation, emotional disorders and cleft lip and palate. The final two chapters cover blindness, osteogenesis imperfecta, steroid therapy, irradiation therapy, techniques for treatment under general anesthesia, and specific dental procedures. The objectives of the book have been realized; however, there are some areas that should have been emphasized and were not. These include the importance of and methods employed in obtaining thorough histories—both medical and dental. Another area which must be stressed when dealing with this type of patient is the introduction of the patient to the dental office environment—not only the emotionally handicapped. The text is the definite value as a concise reference for those in the profession who deal with the special problems of handicapped patients.
