"Doctor De Soto, the dentist, did very good work." With the aid of his able assistant, Mrs. De Soto, he copes with the toothaches of animals large and small. His expertise is so great that his fortunate patients never feel any pain. Since he's a mouse, Doctor De Soto refuses to treat "dangerous" animals—that is, animals who have a taste for mice. But one day a fox shows up and begs for relief from the tooth that's killing him. How can the kindhearted De Sotos turn him away? But how can they make sure that the fox doesn't give in to his baser instincts once his tooth is fixed? Those clever De Sotos will find a way.

I liked this book as a kid, December 26, 2015

I liked this book as a kid, but as a parent I do not. The mice decide to help the fox, but then out of nowhere play a horrible trick on him for no particular reason other than that he is a fox. Not something I want my kid to think is funny.

Ok, this IS my favorite William Steig (short) book. I dont know how many times I have laughed at the line where the fox dreams of eating the mouse with a little bit of dry wine and salt! So unusual for a children's book! The pictures are hilarious too. Unforgettable!

I'm sixty-seven and have 3 kids in their '30's and 2 grandchildren. I've read this book to all my kids/grand-kids and they all love it and remember it dearly. I've also given it as birthday gifts for other children's birthdays and to newborn.
