Walliams makes going to the dentist a wacky adventure with his signature humor—this is one dentist appointment you don’t want to miss. Something strange is happening in Alfie's town. Instead of shiny coins from the Tooth Fairy, kids are waking up to dead slugs, live spiders, and other dreadfully icky things under their pillows. Who would do something so horrific? Alfie is sure that Miss Root, the creepy new dentist in town, is behind it all. There's nothing Alfie hates more than going to the dentist, but to solve this mystery, he may have to book a dreaded appointment….

I picked this book up solely because I'm a fan of Walliams. I wasn't surprised that it was funny or well put together, but I was surprised at how much it reminded me of the books I read when I was a child. Walliams definitely has a similar flare to Roald Dahl, not straying from the creepy because children might not be able to handle it.

David Walliams writes really funny stories. We really enjoyed the description of the chase! This is a great book for encouraging reluctant readers. I loaned it to a friend's daughter, and she "devoured" it in a few days.

Story not what you want for younger children, April 14, 2016

I read this along with my son and was surprised at the dark and macabre aspects of this tale. None of David Walliams other books gives any indication about the dark turn this book eventually takes. My son loved all the characters, they are so well written, I wish that the book hadn't been quite so unsavory. I don't mind my son reading about people being offed, but the demon dentist has a level of malevolence and evil that none of the other nasty characters in the Walliams' other books have. The evil is not managed well or skillfully in a way that glosses over it or mutes it for younger children, and so I do not recommend this novel for younger children, or sensitive and impressionable older children. It's a shame since Walliams' other books are so good.

I gave this book five stars because I liked the ending.
Alfie was a twelve year old boy, he never went to the dentist because when he was younger he went to a dentist that took out the wrong tooth. Alfe's teeth were yellow but some of them were brown.
One day a social worker came to Alfie's home and made an appointment with the New dentist.

This was definitely not a book meant for little kids as it appears to be. This story made me afraid to go to the dentist. It was full of disgusting things that would make any child afraid. It reads like a bedtime book but don't be fooled. LOL.
