A great macro and portrait lens Sigma 70mm f2.8 EX DG, November 14, 2015

Great lens! I use this on my Pentax K-50. It's not a 50mm as the review headline says though while writing this, it's a 70mm. It takes wonderful macro images and I use it quite frequently for that. My images can be seen here: alittleplaceontheweb.com if you would like to see examples. I just used it as a portrait lens and it worked wonderfully for that as well. Very happy with the quality of this lens.

The pics were not great, not even good., November 02, 2015

It doesn't come with any manual. So, if you are a beginner, good luck. It shoots in Automatic mode but the bokeh is just too much. All my pics look like they're shrouded in edge fog. I looked online for any guidance and no luck how to shoot in manual mode with my Nikon D7000. if someone knows how, please let me know and I'll change the feedback.

Great "Normal" Lens, Great Macro Lens, BEST 50mm in this price range!!, December 22, 2014
By Jim Richards

The Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens is one of my favorite lenses. There are faster 50mm lenses, and there are macro lenses that allow longer subject-to-camera distances, but a lens that fulfills the function of a fantastic "normal" lens (I shoot full-frame on a Canon 5D) with exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness and great color rendition AND fulfills the function of a true 1:1 macro lens is already on my short list!
Portraits taken with this lens turn out very sharp, with excellent detail preservation and no visible distortion. Close-Up and Macro shots with this lens give excellent sharpness and focus. An odd design choice was to allow f/45 on this lens, as I've never seen an aperture this small outside of medium and large format lenses...while depth of field is greatly increased, you are so far into diffraction effects that the entire image is hazy and indistinct.
I don't own any zoom lenses, and although I have extensively used the excellent Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 and Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms, I prefer using prime lenses for my photography. There haven't been too many situations where I was unable to use my feet to make one of my lenses an appropriate choice. Currently, I own 4 lenses: Rokinon (Samyang) 35mm f/1.4, Sigma 50mm f/2.8 Macro(under review right here), Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM, and Canon 135mm f/2.8 Softfocus.... The Sigma tends to live on my camera when I'm walking around Chicago...and depending on if I have any planned shots, I'll carry either the 35 or the 85 in my small shoulder case. The ONLY weakness that this lens has involves it's autofocus...the motor is a bit louder than I'd like, and it tends to "hunt"...running all the way to infinity and back to macro before finding it's target, especially if the light is failing. That is by no means a "fatal flaw", and without any reservations let me tell you that if you do not currently own a "normal" lens, then you should take a long look at the Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for your kit!!!

A Macro Lens Thats So Sharp It Is Unbelievable., November 22, 2014

I wanted a great all around macro lens and this lens didn't let me down. A few things to note about this lens, it is one of Sigmas older designs, so the focus motor is a little noisy compared to their newer lenses. But don't let that detour you from buying it, focus is accurate and is fairly fast. I recommend using the Limit switch on the lens when using it for portraits or most any non macro photos. When taking macro shots, I prefer to turn off Auto Focus and unlock the limit switch so you can zoom in to 1:1 on the item you are shooting. Even on a APS-C camera like my Canon 70D and Canon 600D, to get those big macro closeups the lens still gets very close to your subject, so it could be difficult to get a great macro shot of some insects. But if you can't get that close, don't worry. This happens to be one of the sharpest lens I have ever owned. It is truly amazingly sharp from the center out to corner to corner with good contrast and color through out most all of the aperture range. Build quality is respectable for this price range as it feels solid and well constructed. If your looking for an amazing dual purpose 50mm lens, grab this one before they are gone. Sigma no longer makes the Canon mount version, so they are in limited supply. Get yours while you can.. This lens comes highly recommend.
