Doctor, Be Well: Integrating the Spirit of Healing with Scientific Medicine is a book written for doctors, patients, and caregivers. In it, Dr Schuch puts together a framework for understanding how modern medicine and alternative and complementary health care practices fit together, and conveys how doctoring can be a path to the growth of the Spirit. The book has been well received in both the mainstream and the alternative health communities.

One scribe "who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old" Mt 13:52, August 27, 2011

As a patient of Dr. Shuch, I must say that his approach is quite unique. Most of us, upon entering a doctor's office, get the "quick" diagnosis or what can be filled in the "10 minutes" allotted to each patient. This ends in a prescription or referral to another doctor, or a call for a series of tests.
When you call Dr. Shuch for the first time, you must be sure that you can spend about two hours or more in his office for the first appointment. He is not only interested in what is going on inside your mouth--taking x-rays and a complete exam--but also your history and what is going on with your health and in your body right now. He is able to see a relation between his working on your mouth, teeth, gums and bones, and vague or un-diagnose-able disease or symptoms you might be experiencing. He spent seven and a half hours with me before he treated any of my mouth problems. After my first treatment, my whole body felt different.
Dr. Shuch is unique in that he combines all that he learned in dental school, with things that he did not; but, which he discovered on his own. He was able to improve on what his formal training gave him, because he found that not everything he learned worked for each person or had faultlessly precise results. The variable, he found, that could throw all of this off is "the patient." Each of them is different, with their own history and medical issues. Therefore, early on, Dr. Shuch learned to treat the patient and not simply the symptom, condition, disorder or syndrome.
To do to this he reached out to alternative methods. If you have been going to a practitioner of "alternative medicine" for you health needs, you might have been introduced to the idea of "Applied Kinesiology" or "muscle testing," combined with nutritional remedies, founded by the American Chiropractor George Goodheart. Other practitioners might have introduced you to the world of homeopathic medicine, whose fundamental doctrines date back to the mind of Hahnemann around the year 1790. These are just two of the arts which have brought relief and healing to millions decade after decade. Dr. Shuch attests that one great validity tests of these approaches, although not endorsed or prescribed by modern medicine, is that millions of people are willing to pay for these treatments although not covered by medical insurance.
How Dr. Shuch sees these approaches and combines them in his practice is one of the many things you will find in this book. You will also learn of the energy and balance that supports each of our lives and how these, and other matters, which are essentially "spiritual" enter the picture. It is a fascinating study, which I'm sure will have you questioning whatever your approach to health and medicine has been.
I believe that Dr. Shuch touches upon something each person is looking for--especially every patient who is searching for a cure and restoration of health--a doctor who can understand them and their condition--not just someone who has been trained to work on an assembly line. I think you will learn and see health as something completely different after reading this.
I am sure you have heard the term, "holistic medicine." If you want a great understanding of it, how it works, and why it works, read this book.

A new-old paradigm for doctoring, June 02, 2003

Once in a great while someone has the insight, ability, and the courage to break down barriers. In "Doctor, Be Well; Integrating the Spirit of Healing with Scientific Medicine", Dr. David Shuch breaks through a barrier that often prevents patient's from healing, and doctors from doctoring; their relation. As a practitioner of "alternative medicine" for 20 years I am face daily with the need to help my patients shift their paradigm regarding their health. And one of the most challenging aspects of this shift is to help patients develop a balanced relation with me, their treating physician. This must occur at all levels, spiritual, emotional, mental and physical. They must learn to meet me face to face and develope an open honest trusting relation, and I must be willing to do the same with them. Dr. Shuch has provided a useful and informative road map where by both patient and doctor can meet, benefit, and heal. There is an old quote that says; "doctor heal thy self", which also means for "doctor, know thy self". Dr. Shuch offers a clear lesson plan! As I read with delight his descriptions of healing, energy and relations, I could not decide who would benefit most by his clear and warmly written guide, patient or doctor. Truth is, both will benefit, as "Doctor, Be Well", says what all patients want to say and what most doctors have not heard, but need to hear. I highly recommend that every person who requires doctoring read this book, then....give it to your doctor as a gift. Dr. Christopher J Bump
