TCM...say hello to TTM, July 27, 2015

Being a herbalist, I appreciate how the authors provided novel insight into an alternative view of traditional herbal medicine. As a beginner in the field of Tibetan herbal medicine, this book provided a great foundation that I was able to correlate with my understanding of TCM--in fact, it thickens the preparatory and prescriptive practices of TCM to provide a cohesive interdisciplinary approach to the genre of oriental medicine. I believe the book may even be good for somebody who has never studied or practiced any form of herbal healing art because the writing is clear and fundamental, providing explanations useful for beginner and expert alike. While simple line drawings are used to depict the herbs/flowers/roots, the lack of color plates detracts from the beauty of understanding the identification process of what often are rare herbs not easily found in America--but that's my taste. Also, some preparations are difficult to access, procure, and make (like Himalayan mirabilis used in urinary/kidney treatments or bear bile), but these are minor obstacles and should not deter anyone from securing a copy of this great work.

Best Tibetan Medicine book in English, June 13, 2013
By Stephen Boyanton (San Diego, CA)

I am a historian of Chinese medicine and can read Tibetan well enough to slowly work through the original texts. Having read almost everything in English on Tibetan medicine, I can say with confidence that there is no other book as thorough as this one. Some of the others (Health Through Balance, Healing from the Source) might make good intros if you know nothing about the subject, but if you want to really get an idea of how Tibetan medicine works, this is the only choice in English. Really a well-done book.

Mind Opener, October 15, 2011

I loved this book it introduced me to healing and medical concepts completely foreign to my western mind.
The use of Bear bile is disturbing, but clearly denounced in the book. "Because of the endangered or near-endangered status of most bear species and the inhumane conditions in which domestic bear bile is harvested, a substitute is advisable" (P.248).
The book also refers to the value of modern pharmacological research based on historically traditional ingredients and synthetic options.
