This practical and inspirational handbook touches on every aspect of Ayurveda, a traditional healing system of India, for beginners, and serves as a refresher course for more seasoned students. Written by one of the world's leading Ayurveda practitioners and teachers, this guide offers a complete overview and lays out the principal areas of the system-involving eight branches that include medicine, toxicology, and geriatrics-in ways that are easy to follow yet not oversimplified. The author outlines the history, terminology, and practice, and includes a glossary of terms and a well-researched treatment section. The book also contextualizes Ayurveda within Buddhism, and recommends therapies and the herbs and plants that best accompany them.

Outstanding review, March 02, 2016

Not what was expected. There is plenty of extraneous information that's distracting and based off things not of the authors subject field. (you could tear out the introduction) If you're expecting guidance as to actually preparing what is learnt here, you'll end up buying another cookbook/guidebook/handbook. So, I'd recommend buying one that covers it all; Like Amadea Morningstar's The Ayurvedic Cookbook, for anyone looking to master cooking, as well as dieting. It will turn the novice cook, into a well seasoned medicinal chef--fast, and at the same price. Also, as far as becoming practitioners yourselves--please go to Dr. Vasant Lad's books on the subject for the truly most thorough and practicable understanding available--seriously. I was left with a flash card style presentation, and an unsatisfactory feeling. With more edits this book will be great, but for now it's deserves the title, 'An Introduction to Ayurveda', and not at all a handbook.

my brother's hobby, May 25, 2014

While he was in rehab he requested that I get a book on Ayurveda for him. I wanted to be interested and knowledgeable regarding his new hobby but I couldn't get through the first page. I have absolutely no idea what this book is about. It could be a town or a way of life. Or a biography.
