5.0 out of 5 stars.  Exciting New Ideas!, July 26, 2012
By Lenny
The redoubtable Dr. Gibbons has done it again! In << Experience as an Art Form >> - the title drawn from his 13th chapter - he posits an audacious, new concept: "the use of [therapeutic] suggestion as an art form and experience as an artistic medium."

Gibbons, a clinical psychologist, is perhaps best known for his discovery of hyperempiria. In this small volume, he introduces yet another therapeutic modality, the Best Me technique. He also explores the nature of suggestion, trance, and the various induction methods, ultimately applying them to yet another highly original notion - that of "remembering the future," although here it is a very different future than the one the client might normally have expected. Effectively, this mimics the experience of Scrooge with the "Ghost of Christmas Future," as the author wryly notes!

This short volume certainly creates a striking impression, not only because of the creative methodology Gibbons has concocted, but also because of the highly literary, at times almost poetic prose that runs throughout the text. Indeed, the pages are rich in metaphor and imagery, the aforementioned allusion to Dickens (<< Christmas Carol >>) and others, and a number of wonderful, flowery passages. Here, Gibbons writes for the professional, yet produces a text that the layman can understand and appreciate. It will be most interesting to see what emerges when Gibbons writes directly to the layman. I suspect that clinician will find such an opus nevertheless highly educational and instructive!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Good idea-no substance, January 16, 2007

I want theory of hyperempiria and not just some hynotic mantras. I will consider his other book on the application of hyperemperia and get back with you. I love the idea of hyperemperia, I just need more meat on the subject !
