A great camera for the price, especially when paired with inexpensive Minolta lenses., May 21, 2015

First of all I was very satisfied with the buying process for my "gray market" camera without the kit lens. Good communication, fast shipping and the camera came in the original US packaging with only the lens missing. I was able to register the camera and warranty with sony. No worries there.
Now for the camera. I bought the camera to use with my old AF minolta lenses. I consider myself a casual hobbyist photographer and no longer follow the latest camera developments. I use my cameras like I use my old film SLR's missing out on some of the newest digital bells and whistles. Things like having amazingly high burst rates are not a priority for me. This camera replaced an olympus EP-1 micro 4/3rds system.
While this camera is not technically a DSLR it feels and handles just like a small SLR. Despite being relatively light, I would not call this camera compact. I could carry the EP-1 with a pancake lens in a jacket pocket, this would require at least a small camera bag. I have used the camera mostly with with digital view finder. While not as satisfying as looking through a nice glass finder I am happy with its performance. It is crisp works well with my glasses.
The autofocus is much faster then the terrible EP-1, but I don't see a difference between this camera and my 20 year old film SLR's autofocus abilities. The features that lets you track a subject is really cool, but I have not used it much.
The sensor performance has been satisfactory, but I have not shot much in low light yet. (I will update this review when I do) Speaking of low light, the built it flash is terrible, bordering on useless. It washes out every picture, making everything look like it was taken with a cheap point and shoot. This may not seem like a big deal, but a flash is still useful for indoor snapshots and to fill in shadows on sunny days. In both conditions the flash performance is unacceptable.
The controls are average with clear digital menus, but it is missing the intuitive physical controls of more expensive cameras. There will be a bit of a learning curve if you are not coming from another sony product.
All in all I am very satisfied with this camera considering its price. Some parts of the camera seem downright cheap such as the flash and plastic lens mount. However, if you are willing to overlook these details you end up with a very capable picture taking machine for the price.

I use it as a dedicated camera for my Samyang SY85M-S 85mm F1.4 Prime. I have five other Sony alphas and all are dedicated and great.
