5.0 out of 5 stars.  Helped me find my true purpose in life, July 10, 2015
By J. A. Hansen
This little beauty works great for small jobs (credit card, a few pieces of paper, etc.) and can handle upto two pieces of cardstock at one time. Any more than that and it starts to choke. It has a lock on it so that when you're not using it you don't have to worry about the kids (or your husband) sticking their fingers in it. There is a reverse function as well so if you put too much paper in you can get it out pretty easily.

As to the true purpose in my life that this has shown me to, I am quiting school and going to go work in a large bank. This thing is fun to use! I just need one with more industrial power that can handle massive reams of paper all at once and I want to work somewhere that will have the need of huge reams of paper being shredded quickly. I'm hoping the big banks are hiring soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid but average home/light use shredder. Tips to keep it happier inside., July 02, 2015
By William Hardin
I am well experienced in shredders. No I haven't worked for a lawyer or politician but just needed to shred for my businesses and home paperwork.

In fact this isn't my first shredder review. :) But I need to clear up a few shredder misconceptions before I talk about this particular model.

Shredders come in about three groups in my experience.

Group 1--$200 or less for VERY light use for personal documents and small business items. These are the pickiest about what you put in them, need shredder oil the most often and jam the most often. But if you play by the (unwritten) rules, than you should be pretty happy. Perfect if you shred 20 pages or less per day.

Group 2--$200-$800. These are designed for business use and are pretty solid workhorses. They don't jam much and will please you but require a decent upfront investment. They can shred for 15-20+ minutes per use. Perfect if you shred 300 or less pages per day.

Group 3--$800+ These are designed for near consent use and you get a real machine. Less "features" but they will shred almost anything.

I explain these groups because many people use high end shredders at work and then expect that type of performance at home from a group one unit. They are completely different items and really shouldn't be compared. Group one shredders are all a pain at times and will cause more hassle but that is the trade off for it being more compact and much cheaper.

The unwritten rules of group one shredders:

1.) Try to shred half of the "max thickness" or less. This means on the 49c you shred 4 sheets or less at a time. While it CAN handle more, you are going to heat up the unit which leads to your forced time-out which actually costs you time.

2.) Yes it might shred paperclips but take them off. (Same can go for thicker staples and adhesive/stickers/post it notes). These will slow the shredding process down, wear the teeth down a bit and can make for some bad noises.

3.) Yes, actually use shredder oil. You wouldn't drive your car without oil so why shred so much without oiling the machine? Normally the warranty is void if you don't oil regularly.

4.) Make sure your trash can is emptied regularly so it doesn't cause a jam from the scraps getting stuck in the teeth.

5.) When your shredder doesn't work take time to unplug it and let it sit unused for an hour and re-seat it in the stand/can. The sensors can use both of these things to prevent use (to actually protect your investment).

Now onto the 49c. I gave this four stars because it worked fine in my tests (following my rules above and breaking them). It shredded a decent amount before needing a rest but it would be frustrating for frequent business use. I did not have a jam but the reverse feature didn't seem to work as well as some units in this group. Yes it is loud but that should be expected. It did not seem to shake excessively like some models at this price point. I was able to complete everything it advertises. But it did struggle with 8 sheets of heavier weight paper.

I gave it four stars because I didn't see anything that really set it apart from the crowd and instead it seemed to be very average. If you are using this shredder for regular use, you might want to invest in the very cheap protection plans Amazon is offering. Group one shredders don't have the longest life spans. And get a bottle of oil!

I hope this review has helped you. I received a sample for testing but all of these words are my own. ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Cross-cutting and safety are big plusses, July 01, 2015
By Personal Robot
Great shredder. Having the cross-cut capability makes this a much more secure feeling machine for sensitive information like credit cards and their statements or other personal documents.

The photo I've included shows the results of shredding a half-sheet of 8.5x11 paper. The shreds are 1/8" by about 1.5" (shorter than advertised - this is good!) It capably handled 8 sheets, but chugged a bit. I didn't push it beyond that. I don't have a credit card that I can sacrifice, but based on that, I have no doubt that it can easily handle a credit card, though I think it would be pretty easy to piece together a card that was shredded whole. My advice: cut the card into a few pieces and then drop them into the feed slot at various angles so the task is made that much harder for prying eyes.

The unit feels pretty safe. There's a power switch that must be turned on, and then you must slide both the lock switch and the feeder direction buttons into place before it will be ready to shred. You can leave it on and ready to go at any time, and unless you drop a piece of clothing like your tie into it, or your hair, there's little worry about anything threatening your own personal safety. The teeth are set deep enough that anything entering the slot must go a ways before the shredder turns on. P.when('A', 'review-image-binder', 'reviewsLightbox-js').execute(function(A, ReviewImageBinder) { var reviewImageBinder = new ReviewImageBinder(A); reviewImageBinder.bindReview("R3C0PD4UX7C2I", "R3C0PD4UX7C2I_imageSection_main", "R3C0PD4UX7C2I_gallerySection_main"); });

4.0 out of 5 stars.  great for home office use, July 01, 2015
By A Customer
Works well for my home office needs. I shred plain paper documents, junk mail, and expired credit cards without issue. I appreciated the cross cut shredding and recommend this shredder for others who have the same home office requirements.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  The 49C is pretty nice!, June 30, 2015
By CCE
I was initially worried about the cool down time, but it didn't come up as a problem. On one occasion I was shredding years of check carbons and cards for 10 minutes and it didn't shut down, probably because I wasn't running it continuously. (I had to rip the checks out of their packs to shred them.) However, when I opened the top, the shredded paper was definitely warm and the top (the shredder mechanism/motor) was hot to the touch as well. It's rare I'll ever shred things that enthusiastically again, but it's something to keep an eye on.

I had no jams, despite shredding staples, credit cards, prescription receipts (sticker backed paper), mailers with sticky sections, etc. It definitely slows down when you feed it credit cards or heavier paper, but it powered through.

I was worried about the safety features because I have a small child with small fingers and a huge curiosity. I'm going to leave it unplugged when I'm not using it, but I'm comforted that there are additional safety features - the on/off button is on the back of the shredding mechanism (rather than on top for kiddo to play with), and the lock button and the auto-on slider both need to be moved in order to shred.

It's compact and sturdy. I've had shredders that were top heavy and would tip over when you walked by them. This shredder is pretty stable. (Which is good because that would be a huge mess...)

It's quieter than other shredders of this size. It's not silent, but I don't think everyone in the house knew I was shredding either!

Annoyingly, the instructions recommend oiling every time you empty the bin but the box does not contain a supply.
