A must buy for predental students, June 14, 2012
By Ben

I am a first year dental student who just finished the book. I was hesitant at first, but given the effort I have already put into getting in and the struggles I know lie ahead, I decided to give it a shot. It was very useful because in my first year they pretty much threw me into the deep end content wise. There was little general overview and big picture learning; mostly just indepth details. This book was a great way to see the scope of things and get a general understanding of what goes on in each area of the school. I would highly suggest this book for students who want to go into their first or second years ahead of the curve.
Bottom line---This book probably isn't the best for third or fourth year students but its a good read for first years and a must read for anyone about to enter dental school.

A more fitting title would be "Brief Overview of Modern Dental Techniques for Pre-Dental Students.", May 25, 2012

A more fitting title would be "Brief Overview of Modern Dental Techniques for Pre-Dental Students." The current title is absolutely misleading.
Overprice for what is like CliffNotes (74 pages), but only less complete. $19.99 if you consider it an investment, but fair price goes $5.99 for printed copies, and $3.99 for electronic books.
There must be a reason the book is self-published (via CreateSpace). It is almost arrogant that someone who is not yet a dentist published a "guide" without co-authorship with any of his respected professors or dentists. If the book is published for financial reason, given the unforgiving tuition in dental school, the author should adhere to the principle of veracity and kindly note that.
The Goods: -offers a decent deal of useful information on dental techniques. -the first publication of this kind (as far as I know), for the specified audience.
The Bad: -Lack of step-by-step descriptions of dental procedures: it makes the book more of a review than for pedagogy. In other words, they are not as informative as the mini-brochures at my dentist's office. This almost immediately suggest the level of rigor through which the book was made. Fewer than ten citations for all the presented information, though the cited information are indeed fascinating. Also, extremely lacking in orthodontics.
-Lack of scope: The book fails to include an overview of dental research, the direction and future of dentistry. Coverage of innovations and advanced techniques are limited. The only example of advanced modern dentistry is orthognathic surgery, which allows for alteration of the jaw structure. Though interesting, the topic is rather obscure and only insinuates the author's preoccupation. Many interesting topics, such as Invisalign, digital impression, oral manifestation of systemic diseases, or tissue grafting are not covered.
-Lack of names: Real-world knowledge is limited. For example, Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) is the name of one of the military scholarships; Aspen Dental is one of the most commercially successful chained dental clinic. Unfortunately, the author fails to give the names.
-Lack of perspectives: No research on market data, trends, eg increasing number of dental schools, number of dentists, competition, and prospects of residencies. Furthermore, nothing is mentioned about the commercialization of dentistry, intrusion of insurance company, increasing retirement age, or any business aspects of dentistry.
-Lack of guidance: No descriptions of the life of a typical dental student, eg curriculum, workload, laboratory, Board Exams (which are now pass/fail), preparation for exams, clinical training, hospital rotation, service trip. Not a word whatsoever.
-Lack of advices: for students, before, during, and after dental school.
To summarize, the book offers plenty of information on dental techniques, but it is only half-complete. Though the book claims to be a "Complete Pre-Dental Guide," the title is misleading and the price is ludicrous. Only, the author cannot wait to have an extra publication in his resume before completing his degree.

Anxiety Reducer, April 10, 2012

I'm going to be starting dental school next year and I'm really nervous about it, since I don't have any family members that are dentists. I read this book and it really gave me great insight to common terminology and the wide variety of subject matters within the dental profession. I don't know how much it will help me going forward but it relieved some large amounts of anxiety temporarily! I think it is a great buy for those of you who are in a similar position.

Great intro to dental school!, April 09, 2012

I am currently a 3rd year dental student and wish there would have been a book like this 3 years ago. You can only learn so much from shadowing a dentist before you start dental school, but reading this book gives great insight into the world of dentistry. I would label this book as a "must-read" before entering dental school or even considering dentistry as a career choice.

I just got into a dental school and ordered this book as soon as I heard about it. I'm still nervous about school but at least now I feel like I have something to work with. Definitely helped!
