Be careful before you buy into this treatment, April 13, 2014

I have had prolotherapy from a different doctor and I think it has helped me with my knees, but proved unhelpful on my shoulder. I wanted to learn more of it and my doc recommended the Hauser's book. I found it helpful but wished it had more science. As I looked into it more, and after having my insurance decline to pay for treatments, I realized there is very little scientific evidence to support prolotherapy.
This book could have done a LOT more to defend prolo if it focused on that issue. Instead, it demanded acceptance with little proof, and (therein not surprisingly) the book was replete with cheesy religious references crammed down your throat. I can forgive that, I have nothing but respect for people who have strength in their convictions, and I am a very spiritual person myself, but it crosses the line when you try to fill gaps in logic/proof with religion. I am told wife Marion injected those references (so says the doc who recommended the book) so I tried to focus on the passages I imagined (the legitimate) doctor (Mr.) Hauser wrote. What I mean by crossing the line is, there are so many dogmatic religious references (especially in comparison to the lack of scientific evidence) that it brings the whole book into question. As I argue with my health insurance provider about paying for prolo, it'd be great to hang my hat on this book to defend prolo, but the entire thing is in question because (at least one of) the authors loses their grasp on reality and logic. For example, how can you take a "scientific" book seriously when on page 281 when describing unknown explanations for pain it actually says "It could be God's purpose for your life at this particular moment to have pain because He wants you first and foremost to acknowledge Him in your life". I mean, really? I thought Dr's were logical and scientific, but to actually suggest that God wants you to be in pain so you can accept him, and to hint that if you don't, you deserve more pain - is ridiculous, closed minded, a cop out, and insulting. It removed most of my FAITH in this book. It hints that people who accept things only on faith with little proof, people easily fooled by snake oil salesmen, THOSE poor chaps are the same weak minded fools who believe prolo can actually induce your bones and ligaments to magically grow together again.
HOWEVER...because prolo did help my knees, and because there is SOME science in here, I still am trying hard to believe in prolo and actually would recommend reading this book. I just wish Ross would have kept Marion and her religious dogma away from the keyboard.
