Have you ever walked into a dentist’s office and been entirely clueless as to what you’re supposed to expect? If you have, you wouldn’t be the first person. Mindful Dental Consumer is the guide set out to change that. In today’s society, everything is fast paced, including our health care—and dentistry is no exception. Yet you shouldn’t be forced into making sudden and rushed decisions about the lasting benefits and consequences of your dental health care. John Percival, DDS, MSc, has created the ultimate guide to making dentistry approachable, and educating you on all facets of your dental treatment. Mindful Dental Consumer explains the differences between common dental procedures and treatment options, including their benefits and consequences. It also educates you on common dental materials used in said treatments, as well as the cost effectiveness of certain plans, in order to enlighten you on what option might be best for your long-term care. After reading this guide, you’ll never be in the dark again. If you desire above-standard dental treatment and want to learn how to make educated decisions on your oral health, Mindful Dental Consumer is the perfect guide for you. Author Information John Percival, DDS, MSc, has been a practicing dentist for nearly forty years. After receiving his undergraduate and dental degrees at Ohio State University, he continued on as a postdoctoral researcher in biophysics at the same institution. He later earned an MSc. in epidemiology from Erasmus University, Rotterdam. His research was an essential foundation for his outlook on dental care and his holistic approach to his practice. In the 1980s, he cofounded and was CEO of Imagex Inc. The company created one of the very first prototypes for filmless, digital radiographic devices, currently used in dentistry and medicine.

Experience may be the best teacher, but it can also be the most painful and expensive. Dr. Percival has written a masterful guide for reducing both the pain and expense of your dental care.
With an emphasis on safe, holistic and ethical treatments, the book provides a concise, complete guide for people who seek dental care. It emphasizes a conservative approach to treating dental issues versus invasive treatments that are more expensive and provide little added value for the patient.
Topics include: - how to choose a dentist or type of practice and what questions to ask before your first appointment; - what to expect from your first appointment, how to interpret results of examinations, and when to seek a second opinion; - differences between holistic and traditional dentistry; - clear explanations of common dental procedures, including risk/benefit assessments; - toxicity and durability of dental materials; - financial considerations and next steps in maintaining oral health.
The list of references provides many links you may peruse to gain deeper knowledge about dental practices and materials. References also explain how oral health relates to general health.
A goal of this book is to help patients recognize, from biological/financial perspectives, when a dentist is proposing unnecessary or overly aggressive treatment. Out of a concern for both patient and provider safety, it also suggests alternatives to ADA orthodoxy on the use of fluorides and mercury amalgams.
Bottom line: buy this book and attend to its suggestions--you will reduce the cost and pain of learning about oral health from experience.

I've gained so much more information about dental practices and procedures from reading Dr. Percival's book. I would recommend dental patients young and old to become better acquainted with dentistry as it is today, since it's ever changing, and this book addresses that.

Knowledge and Insight I wish I had heard long ago!, July 19, 2016
By John Graham

I have not previously thought of myself as a “dental consumer”, but upon reflection that is the relationship that exists. And as a consumer I have not been well prepared or informed. This book was a great place to start my education in a systematic way. After having read the book, I realize how “in the dark” I have been. And I see that it doesn’t have to remain that way. The book provides a good deal of valuable information.
