Excellent Review Book, Albeit A Little Dated, March 29, 2014

I'm always puzzled by people who leave negative reviews for a book that they haven't even read! Or people who require a book (not a review -course- mind you) to guarantee that they pass an exam. I guess some people will do (or write) anything to feel significant.
I'm using this book as part of my preparations for the Boards. It's not the only thing I'm using (I'm also doing a review course) because I realize you need to have as many "tools" in your toolbox as possible to make sure you're prepared. Given the cost of taking the Boards (or having to repeat them), $200 is a drop in the bucket!
Anyway, I found the review book to be quiet comprehensive. When it comes to passing the Boards, you need to go wider instead of deeper, and this book does the trick. It provides a sufficient treatment and review of every significant area (e.g., pharmacology, neuroanesthesia, systemic diseases, etc.) without going too deep. The book assumes that you're already familiar with the terminology, nomenclature, and the major concepts (this is not a text book, obviously). So for example, it lists the factors that increase coronary artery flow or could lead to a cardiac event during surgery, but doesn't go into the details for each of them.
It does provide a number of tables, charts, and graphs to help you recall and remember the important ratios and interdependencies. And that's one area I would like to see improved: more charts and graphs. I'm a visual person, and they would really help me retain the material better. Also, I suggest the author revisit and update this review book since there have been changes to the accepted practice since this book was published.
Overall, though, a great review book. Add it to your toolbox and pass the Boards on your first go...

I did not read the book , and I won't buy this book. It will not offer anything fancy. Brian Hall is for sure better than this book. I checked the sample material, nothing extraordinary. I will buy it when he drops the price from over than 300$ to 30$. We are not idiots!!

Gimme a break, November 28, 2012

I haven't read it. And I won't. Unless the product comes with a money-back guarantee if one doesn't pass the test, it is drastically overpriced.

Excellent Anesthesia Board review, December 21, 2011

I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about but where I'm from, you can't get into a review course for less than a grand, not including travel and lodging!! I compared this book with Jensen's board review stuff and I must say that I continue to find Jensen's price tags shocking. A friend of mine had the Jensen "big blue" which I looked through and after comparing the content and price tag decided to go with this one instead. I'm glad I did! This book has all the topics covered in Jensen's book and more. It provides a detailed presentation of all the important topics and has a number of fun mnemonics and phrases to help you remember stuff.
As a third year resident I used this book to study for the written boards and can tell you that this book helped me pass the boards. I'm now using it as a review for the oral boards and I think that this book definitely does the job. It covers in detail areas that are heavily and commonly tested by the boards and provides a concise review in areas that are tested less frequently. If you want to know the fine details of the copper kettle this isn't the book for you, look at Miller's 900 page text instead. But if you want a solid review book that is easy to carry around and that you can utilize for the written and oral boards look no further.
On a side note, you should check out the board review podcasts that Dr. Moshiri puts out twice a month for free! Most are based on chapters from this book and are excellent to listen to while out and about. Jensen charges 15 bucks for his and only puts out one per month. Go ahead get into beyond anesthesia, you won't regret it!

What kind of a price tag is this? And for what? You can go for a decent live course for this money instead! Too overpriced in my opinion! And from the previewd chapter, there's definitley a lack of illustrations aid in this book!!!
