Fluoride is a mineral that works by making the teeth stronger and more resistant to decay caused by acid and bacteria. The most common form of fluoride is sodium fluoride, used in most over the counter toothpastes and mouthwash products containing fluoride. Stannous fluoride, the active ingredient in Just for Kids, has antibacterial properties; less bacteria means less acid byproduct. But it also helps to convert the tooth mineral hydroxyapatite into fluorapatite, which fortifies the enamel against acid attacks. Stannous fluoride remains active for up to 8 hours, providing anti-microbial activity and strengthening tooth enamel.
