Works exactly as advertised, August 26, 2009

I ordered the Delta alloy stem raiser because my steerer tube wasn't long enough to get my handlebars into the proper position. I'm somewhat tall but, proportionally speaking, my arms aren't very long, so getting a good fit has always been a challenge. Frames that work for my height and leg length invariably place the handlebars too low and too far forward. My saddle is raised quite a bit, but even with the handlebars at their max height, riding on the brake hoods or top section of the bar felt more like riding in the drops. And forget about *actually* riding in the drops - they were almost too low to reach if I wanted to keep my head looking forward. Plus, just riding on the brake hoods had me bent over far enough to impede my breathing, which brought on fatigue earlier than normal.
Now that I've installed the Delta stem raiser (along with a stem that has less forward extension), all is right with the world. I can go on long rides without fatigue, and I can ride in the drops when I want to. A great product that works exactly as advertised.
I have only two nitpicks: First, the allen bolt that connects this product to the star nut in your steerer tube is deep inside the unit. You need a fairly long allen wrench to reach down inside the stem raiser and tighten this bolt. Other reviewers have commented on this. I have a pocket-knife-style set of allen wrenches, and mine just *barely* reached far enough to properly tighten the bolt. If the wrench had been one half of a millimeter shorter, I wouldn't have been able to finish installing the stem raiser. Secondly, the black finish is glossy, which some people might prefer, but it doesn't match the flat or matte finish on most black stems. But this is an extremely minor nitpick.
Lastly, this is not a nitpick, but something to keep in mind: At the maximum handlebar height that this stem raiser allows, there's a chance that you won't have enough slack in your brake and shifter cables. However, this is not a flaw in the product's design. Rather, it's a natural consequence of raising your handlebars substantially above their original position. I didn't encounter this problem, but other users might.

Wonderful product!, March 16, 2008
By Vintage Raleigh Fan (San Francisco, CA)

I bought the 1 1/8" black Delta Stem Raiser for my commuter bike as soon as I discovered it's existence- I've been commuting to work on my bike for years, and I always wished that my handlebars were a little bit higher but only recently decided to do something about it.
Installation was simple, and I only had one problem- I didn't have an allen wrench in my toolkit long enough to reach down inside of the raiser tube to tighten the center bolt and had to run out and buy one (I was surprised that it wasn't bundled with one).
My bike is way more comfortable now- it's amazing what a difference a few inches will make! Highly recommended.

I hate it, March 16, 2010

I was truly looking forward to this product and was extremely dissapointed. The inside diameter is too small and this info is not provided. I own a Fuji road bike. I was going to buy another product until I realized it was manufactured by the same company. Again, no info on the diameter is provided. You just lost a customer.

Bought it for my GMC Topkick bicycle. I didn't realize how uncomfortable a mountain bike was for long-distance riding. This riser was simple to install and took my handlebars up 3". This made all the difference in the world in comfort taking weight off my hands and allowing me to ride more upright.

Delta Bicycle Stem Raiser, May 9, 2010
By Ken

|
Just what the Doctor ordered! I'm not a "hard mountain rider", but I LOVE the way a mountain bike handles and feels on the streets, paths, and light trails. My only complaint (and it was a major one), was the extreme lean angle required to ride. A lot of weight and force applied to my arms and hands, made riding something less than enjoyable, and quite fatiguing. My search ended when I found this Stem Raiser on Amazon.
Installation was a BREEZE, and it looks GREAT! The ONLY tool required to complete the transformation, is an Allen Wrench. Total installation time = LESS than 10 minutes!
At first, I thought I might need something with a little more height, but much to my surprise, this was PERFECT! The additional height was enough to make riding a pleasure, and was well within the slack range of all existing brake and gear cabling.
A MUST for fellow sufferers.
I posted some pics in the pics section of the review.

Exactly what my GMC Topkick needed., April 16, 2010
By Kevin Ruettiger

|
I needed to raise the stem on my GMC Topkick Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike so that I could attach the iBert Safe-T Front Mounted Child Bicycle Seat. It was simple to setup and worked beautifully. I had never owned a bike with a threadless stem before so I was a little confused, but after some googling and reading amazon reviews I decided on this product and I have no regrets.

Saved my bike!, November 25, 2009
By chuanha1

I had an old hybrid bike that I had not used in years because it hurt my wrists to ride it. Adding two inches to the stem with this product made all the difference. I can ride the bike again comfortably because more of my weight is on the seat, less on the handlebars. The quality of this product is about as good as it could be; it's strong but light.
I've read that many road and hybrid bikes have a frame geometry designed for racing, even though they're sold to consumers for recreation or commuting. Especially for tall riders, the typical riding position, crouched over handlebars that are level with the seat, is hard on your wrists. So this product makes the bike fit the way it should have in the first place.
Installation takes a little skill. When you remove the top bolt in your old stem, that will loosen the whole stem assembly (which contains bearings). Put on the extender and push down on the whole stem assembly while tightening the bolt inside. You'll need a long hex key, or a 3/16 flat head screwdriver will also fit the bolt. Then tighten the side bolts. If you can feel the stem/fork move when you lean on the front brakes, it isn't tight enough.

This really saves the hands and wrists and wrists if you are tall, April 25, 2008
By Bfixit (Al. USA)

I bought this item for my 08 Cannondale F6 hardtail. It fit fine, it is extremely strong, and it totally transformed the riding position of the bike. It did not make it into a beach cruiser as some would speculate but instead made the riding position still a forward lean but not so extreme. Without this extension my hands and wrists were under extreme stress while riding off-road to the point where I had to stop every few minutes to rest from the pain. Now I can ride all day without a problem from my hands or wrists (legs are another story). I would highly recommend it for the other tall guys of the world who want to ride a mountain bike.

Stem Raiser IS GREAT!, January 20, 2008
By MadMan (Florida)

|
I bought this stem raiser to adjust the height of my handlebars and it did the trick. I am more comfortbanle riding my bike without hunching over. This product was easy to install with a couple alan wrenches. I installed mine on my Schwinn mtb with only one hang up. I had to purchase an additional WASHER to make the stem raiser fit properly. It works great, but I had almost an 1/8" gap under raiser after fastening it down as tight as it would go. The additional washer costs me $1 which is a bargain. I've riden bike several times and stem raiser has performed well.

Simple Perfection, January 29, 2011
By AN

|
This is a simple product that does a perfect job for what it was designed. The installation is simple enough and effective. After the attachment to my bike's stem, the ride feels just as secure as before. The bolts are a bit oversized (6mm) and that adds to the feeling of security. Together with a trekking (butterfly) handlebar, my rides are now a lot more confortable for my back and hands allowing me to enjoy riding even more.

Well made and worth the money..., October 31, 2010
By David Walters (Morgan, GA)

Am using the Allow Bicycle Stem Raiser now on my hybrid. Problem with the hybrid is I'm 6' tall and don't want to have to lay over on the bike when riding so the best choice for me was to raise the handlebars about 3 to 4 inches. The Delta allowed this and the installation was simple. Took about 5 minutes and the hardest part was relining the handlebars again with the front wheel. Its a problem solver. Nice product for the money.

Perfect - almost., July 22, 2010
By D. Donelson

I give the product 5 stars for overall functionality and quality. I was surprised at how beefy and strong this unit is, which makes me feel very safe since this is such a critical connection point. Very sturdy and well-made, and quite attractive - with one unfortunate exception. The top cap is a cheesy nylon that for me takes away significantly from the rest of the product. You think Delta would include a nice machined aluminum cap to match the rest of the item, which again is superb. Since I have to look at the cheesy cap every time I ride my bike it certainly lessens the aesthetic value of an otherwise very nice bit of gear. Not quite enough to make me return it since it works so well, but definitely a shortcoming on Delta's part and makes it a 4-star instead of a full-blown 5 star product. I'm going to try to find a way to get a nice top cap to fit into the barrel of this and then it would be sublime.

OK, but...., September 13, 2009

Wish there was a list of bikes this thing would work with. They do give you a measure for diameter however how deep you need to go so it would fit on existing stem would matter. BTW if you have Schwinn 26" bike, plan on cutting down the existing stem about 1/4 inch.

Almost Perfect, July 9, 2009
By J. Edward Hurst (Oklahoma)

For raising your hand position, this extender is one of the simplest and best answers. I found the installation was simple enough without any instructions. The only minor drawback was the socket in the base of this extender was a little too shallow, and I had to shim the top of the fork just a bit to maintain the proper spacing.

I am 6' 2" and wanted to sit more upright on my Giant Iguana which I use for mainly street and light trails. This gave me a few extra inches of elevation and really improved the feel of the bike. I wish it had come with some of those round spacers but otherwise it works nicely and has a strong fit.

Worked like a charm., May 31, 2011
By World traveler - ghost story & gadget.. (St. Louis, MO United States)

Bought one of these for my bike because I was constantly hunched too far over and I'd added the maximum number of shims possible to my handlebars.
So, I figured for the price this was a decent option to try and correct my biking stance.
Took several minutes to put it on...maybe 1/2 an hour total. You'll want a set of hex wrenches, preferably T-shaped, not the swiss-army-knife kind since the fastener pin is pretty far down in the stem.
However, with the right tools it took no time at all to apply to my bike, and my riding stance feels much more natural now.
One other possible concern that others have mentioned is the brake cables. In my case they were long enough, but any time you add length to your stem you run the risk of not having enough cable to span the distance. I had just enough, but understand that application of this product may necessitate replacement of one or both break cables or the shifter cable as well.

Delta Bike Stem, August 9, 2011
By Marine Corps Nomad
|
|
I purchased the stem raiser for my husband's Trek 4300 (19.5" frame) after reading the reviews and looking at the price. It was purchased so he could sit more upright (he's 6'4") on his bike while using his Kurt Kinetic trainer and still get some exercise in while recovering from back surgery. For this purpose, it worked great. Yes, the front brake cable was a bit tight, and he had to adjust his computer and a few other things to make it fit right, but it did the job well.
The top cap is cheap in appearance and does inhibit the performance of the product (more on that later). The construction is good and the bolt provided does sit deep, but can easily be accessed using a T-handle allen wrench or an extension on a 3/8 socket and ratchet. The top is a plastic screw on and does not add to the function, only the appearance. The issue with this is that the pressure needed to hold the fork and stem together now rests solely on the screw. The original bike design had the screw going through the cap, which then distributed the pressure throughout the top of the stem and increasing the amount of pressure. At first, it didn't seem important.
However, when he recovered enough to take his bike on the road and through some sandy and rocky areas, the handle bars would easily turn one way and the tire another way (resulting in separation from his bike - aka wipeout - not good when still recovering from back surgery). He torqued the bolt some more, to the point where the star the bolt goes into began to come up the fork tube. Still, the handle bars could easily be turned while holding the tire. He removed the stem raiser and put it back to stock to make sure the raiser was the issue. Immediately, the stem and fork tightened up and would not move.
He does plan on using the stem raiser in the future, but he will have to modify the design to get the proper amount of pressure needed to hold the stem and tire together.
I gave this three stars due to the fact that it worked well on the trainer, but it did not work well when used outdoors.

Perfect for Schwinn Hybrids!, July 23, 2011
By rrr71 (middle tennessee)

This is exactly what you'll need to raise your handlebars on the non-adjustable Schwinn. I have a Schwinn Tourist hybrid bike and this stem raiser did exactly what I needed it to do. It's also easy to install. What a difference on long rides. No more pain in my back or the palms of my hands. The only thing I did not like is the center ring bolt is not long enough to re-attach the schwinn emblem, but thats ok you can use the generic ring that comes with product. I was bummed about my new bikes non-adjustable handlebars until I learned about this product. I'm a happy rider again! Thanks Amazon!

Great product, nice and solid!, June 26, 2011
By T. Jain

This really worked out well with my Schwinn Katana road bike. Had to raise the handle bar a couple of inches and this did it nicely. It feels quiet sturdy so far and mounts with ease. The only issue I think is that I wish it came with a couple of spacers of different sizes (just a couple), to give more mounting flexibility. Otherwise, highly recommend it if you are fitting your own bike, but do get a set of spacers (I think they are a couple of bucks on amazon), to modulate the height once you install the handlebar stem.

Ugly but functional, April 18, 2011
By John
|
|
For some bicycles with certain headset, the Delta Stem Raiser will be flush and have a clean look. If this happens to you, then you may not need to change your cables. Unfortunately, mine looks ugly as it sits on top of the headset leaving a bit of a gap and I need to do a rear derailer cable adjustment.
Otherwise, it made my ride more comfortable which is my intentions of getting this product. Couldn't find a stem that suited my needs nor handle bars that had the right height , sweep, etc and this contraption made it just right.
Now I sit upright, less pain on my back and i can actually go farther in comfort.

Amazon Bike Build, April 13, 2011
By MussSyke
|
|
I bought and modified my GMC Topkick completely on Amazon. Add this and a better seat, and I love my bike!
This made an incredible difference, both for my back and for my palms. My back because I now feel fairly natural and comfortable on my bike, and my plams because I do not have so much weight leaning on them as I used to. Somehow, the handlebars themselves now feel quite alright, whereas they hurt me before.
I am 6'1" (for real, not exaggerated like most guys seem to do), and this is a must for me for the Topkick.
Oh, another reviewer noted that you couldn't use your existing stem cover. That does suck, and this could have been designed to do that, but I'm so happy with it and the price that I cannot deduct a star.

The perfect solution, April 6, 2011
By MSE (USA)
|
|
I recently bought a Specialized Rockhopper mountain bike to pedal up and down the hills of Western Massachusetts and had this constant feeling that I was about to "endo" over the handlebars; especially when going downhill. I grew up riding 10- and 12-speeds in Southern California and so I figured it was just the mountain bike causing me to lean forward more for proper weight distribution. My seat was the proper height for my leg length, but my handlebars were noticeably lower than my saddle. After researching different solutions, I settled on this product and I am glad I did.
Installation took about 10 minutes - didn't even have to replace my brake and gear cables as they were plenty long enough. The difference was night and day, let me tell you. I feel much more centered and can now ride for longer distances without sore hands. And no more feeling like I'm about to pitch over the front! This was the perfect addition to my bike and can't wait to log some good miles this summer.
As other reviewers have already mentioned, you will need a long hex wrench in order to install this stem extender. Just be sure to tighten the center bolt good enough. You should not have any wiggle backward or forwards, if installed correctly.

Improves biking comfort, March 2, 2011
By whidbeypix (Whidbey Island, Washington USA)

Installation was quick and the added height is great! I'm a casual rider, so my terminology may be off.
This is a nicely finished accessory. The machine screw that pulls it down to the steerer is a different size from the mondo large pair that clamp to the steerer. A third size fit the stem clamp on my bike. I found everything I needed in my assorted tool bags. Would have been in trouble with the center screw but I used a bit in a handle, and my photo shows this reached with 1/4" to spare. Once I had the tools, installation took five minutes.
My 90s Trek 8000 was set up with enough slack in the cables to work at the maximum height this extension allows. But it takes more to get the stem on than you need in operation. Mine just made it.
Haven't ridden yet (too windy today) but sitting on the bike I can tell that this will greatly improve my comfort. I didn't want to take on a project requiring special bike mechanical expertise, so this gadget was just the thing.

I bought a bike that was a little too small for me. I had to lean over so much to grasp the handles that my hands went numb and my neck was killing me.
I wasn't sure what I needed in order to solve this issue...new bar? adjustable stem? Then I ran across this product. Installation was really only 5 minutes. I had no issues with cable length. Took my bike for a spin and instantly I felt the difference. My arms have the correct bend. My hands aren't numb and my neck is fine. Also because of the angle of my head tube it brought my bars a little closer to me as well. Worth every penny!

Easy to use, July 6, 2010
By Mark in Tempe (Tempe, AZ USA)
|
|
I like this stem riser better than the Satori Adapter for Ahead Stem (Heads-Up) product because it doesn't require the use of spacers.
Threadless headsets normally transfer the force of the center screw (inside the steerer tube) through the stem and spacer surfaces (outside the steerer tube). But, the Delta doesn't. The center screw doesn't tighten on the riser's cap. The cap is just decorative. The screw tightens inside the riser's extension tube. Therefore, you can clamp your stem anywhere on the riser's extension tube without spacers.

Excellent upgrade for my mongoose, August 20, 2009
By Tech-mike (to-do-le-do-ohio)

I bought this after I found that my new mongoose's handlebars weren't height adjustable and used the thread-less headset. I was riding to work everyday and finding my back was getting sore. This was an easy install and fit exactly. The only other modification I had to make was to lengthen the cables as the cables would pull out of the housing due to the higher handlebars. Over all this product is well engineered and fit exactly what i needed to make my bike commute more comfortable.

Handlebars Doo-Flotchie, July 12, 2009
By Steven Lefler (Kenai, Alaska)

I was really frustrated when I bought an expensive bike and the height of the handlebars (known as stem height) was not adjustable even though the seat-height was adjustable. The bike shop (Dicks) seemed uninterested and blew me off. They wanted to sell me new handlebars!
After a short search of the internet I found this "Extender".
This product (commonly called a "Raiser", "Extender", or "Adapter") works as advertised, in both installation and operation! How refreshing. It even color matches and looks original.
Highly recommended.

Good product, July 10, 2009

It does what it said it does and what its supposed to. Easy installation. Except I needed a eXtra long allen wrench to install it accurately.
I would recoment this to anyone who has back problems, or anyone who just wants to ride in comfort. 3 inches of extra height makes a BIG difference.

Works, June 16, 2009

Just as it says on the box... works fine... The curved neck isn't the prettiest and you can't put a spacer to cover that part to make it look like one smooth piece but hey, its just visual...

Excellent!, June 15, 2009

Just what the doctor ordered, so to speak, for getting rid of the lower back pain and sore palms that I had always experienced while riding my mountain bike. With the stem raiser in place and the handlebars just a couple of inches higher, I wasn't hunched over as much, and the slight angle change of my torso took a lot of the pressure off my hands. Amazing! Like another reviewer pointed out, you may have to adjust or change out a cable if you don't have enough slack for the new height (front disk brake cable in my case).

Bicycle Stem Raiser, June 5, 2009
By Vinnie C (New York City)

Well, with the Delta Stem you will be getting exactly what you see in the picture. It will allow you to raise the handle bars anywhere from 1 to 3 inches. The part is very strong and makes a Big Difference as you ride. Your back will thank you!
The only problem is this part comes with a black top cover. Not like the chrome one in the picture. This is no Big Deal.

Does what it should, May 12, 2009

This raiser does exactly what it is supppose to do - raise your handlebars. It looks well made and fits perfectly. Looks good too.
I actually had to remove a spacer. I don't know how they could add extra spacers and accommodate everyone. They would have had to raise the price for those of us who don't need them.

What more can you say? This product does exactly what it says it does. I'm tall, so this was a godsend...it reduces strain on the back and wrists. If you are a commuter or casual rider, I would highly recommend this item.

needs some modification, January 28, 2012
By John F. Rantschler (Tucson)

The raiser does not have a deep enough throat to make a bolt-on fix on my bike... required an extra shim between the bearing shim and the raiser.. not a big deal if you have a shim or can make one.

Tightened as hard as I could. Still rotates around the fork stem.
The fork is nothing unusual not found on other bikes.

Works great, December 28, 2011

The Delta bicycle stem raiser was easy to install and works as advertised. I needed a more upright position on my mountain bike to relieve tension in my lower back. The 3" rise did the trick and was not that expensive.

Major help!, December 22, 2011
By Cheri (Mexico)

I had to quit a long-distance bike ride because the fit for my touring bike wasn't quite right. I was leaning way too hard on my hands and ended up with nerve inflammation. This raiser works like a charm. It brought my handlebars up enough that I'm not putting my weight on my hands. It's well made and does exactly what it's meant to do. It's worth every penny!

Does just what I want., December 9, 2011

I've been using this little hunk of metal for a bit over a year (though I hardly actually use my bike). I but it on my older Specialized Hard Rock Pro to make is more commuter friendly (along with some fat slicks), and it works. I like to jump of curbs and such and it's held up just fine.

Perfect Fit x 2, October 29, 2011
By BUGZ

Installation was a breeze. Installed Two of them in less than 30 min. Fit and finish is outstanding. Always wanted a little higher handlebars without changing the bars on my mountain bike. Have not ridden it on any serious trails, however it feels great on the street. Don't hesitate if you considering an extension like this.

Really improves comfort of riding, September 16, 2011
By M. Detlefsen
|
|
This device is definitely something I've been needing for a while. I installed it on my mountain bike several weeks ago, and it has transformed the comfort. I no longer have to lean so far forward to ride (I'm an old dude, and really like a more upright posture).
It installed easily, the only downside is that you really have to put some muscle into tightening the Allen screws to keep it from turning on the shaft. I recommended this to a friend, and that was his comment also. He didn't discover this until he went out riding with it the first time.
A good gadget, four stars!

The stem raised the handlebar level with the seat so the bike is MUCH more comfortable to ride now. It was easy to install, but it helps to have long hex keys.

Ode to my back, November 13, 2011
By Stew (Florida couch)
|
|
This brought my shoulders up to where my back was more comfortable. The bullhorns allow me to get into a more aggressive stance as well. If you have the drop handle bars this could be a happier medium for you. I do think that the top screw in plug should also be aluminum instead of plastic. It's probably better for corrosion resistance when it's plastic, keeping it from seizing together. Would buy again
