5.0 out of 5 stars.  A History Lesson, March 31, 2006
By the_bassist (the back 9)
Bag Balm... okay I don't have the real history, but I do have an oral history. This product was developed for Cow milk bags. There is another product called Udder Cream, which was developed for the Cow's udders.

'nuff said? Okay... I was told about this product many years ago. At one time you could only purchase it in obscure places.... like fabric stores etc...

I was a brick layer. My hands and just about every other body part that was privy to lime... Dried out like crazy.

My buddy told me about these products (his wife told him)... I got some. Man.... total moisterizer. Better than Corn Huskers and that's pretty good!

So I get Bag balm.... great. I get a massage every now and then, I tell the massage lady to use the bag balm... incredible stuff! ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE.

If you haven't tried it... do! It is the BEST.... BAR NONE.

Take it from a reformed bricklayer/cement finisher.... IT REALLY WORKS!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Surprisingly effective., January 12, 2004
By A Customer Bag Balm (aka cow salve) was originally developed for soothing sore, chapped udde
Bag Balm (aka cow salve) was originally developed for soothing sore, chapped udders (yes, on cows). However, it has successfully been used on human for years. It's great for minor scrapes and abrasions (I use it for cat scratches), acting as a soothing, antiseptic ointment. It's also superb for extremely chapped skin such as dry, cracked heels or fingers.

The pluses:

- It's cheap, and a tin of it will last for years.
- It works beautifully.
- It can be used on pets, livestock and humans!

The minuses:

- It contains lanolin, so avoid it if you're allergic to wool.
- It's greasy, and has a pungent medicinal smell (you're not going to want to wear it out as a moisturiser).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  INCREDIBLE STUFF!, June 8, 2006
By MRD (Somewhere in the Field)
I recall first hearing about Bag Balm at an adult Scout Leader training retreat. One of the participants started talking about Bag Balm and how he used it for everything from burns to lip balm. Needless to say, I was intrigued and, upon returning from the retreat, did a little more investigating.

When I asked my wife whether she had ever heard of the stuff she immediately said that she had and that one of my toddler nephews was then using Bag Balm under a doctor's direction for pesky diaper rash. I then began to question some of my horse riding buddies. They too had heard of it and used it with very positive results.

I immediately went out and bought a big tin for my medicine cabinet and a couple of small more portable tins to keep around my office and car and use as lip balm.

I couldn't be more pleased. I have used Bag Balm as an excellent lip balm and have used it on minor cuts and abrasions as well. Rubbed directly into the skin. Under Band-Aids. You name it. The stuff, as originally touted by my Scouting friend, seems also to have antibacterial properties. Now, I am not a doctor and I don't play one on TV so please don't take that as some sort of prescription.

Putting it in a nutshell, Bag Balm is incredible stuff and it works. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great all purpose goop for Psoriasis, July 8, 2005
By Castal (Socorro, NM)
This little green tin has been a miracle for my psoriasis. My hands used to crack and peel and be overall really painful, till I started using Bag Balm. Some people find the smell a bit strong, if so, just use it when you are getting ready in the morning since it goes away really fast. It works great on scratches, cracked and irritated skin (as long as you aren't allergic to lanolin) because it has a small amount of antiseptic along with the moisturizing base. I love this stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Use for the diaper rash that won't go away!, March 28, 2006
By The Discerning Mom (Albany, NY United States)
Our oldest child would get a reaction from the zinc oxide in diaper rash creams. He was also very suseptible to diaper rash, A&D ointment worked pretty well, but on the rashes that wouldn't go away, Bag Balm was the only thing that would really work.

It's a great baby shower gift and was necessary part of the nursery for all three of our children.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  bag balm booster, March 18, 2006
By Louis H. Nevell (los angeles)
I use bag balm on my butt before I ride my bike. It prevents rubbing and chafing. As a result, my bottom is always as smooth as that proverbial baby's. Also, rub it on upper arms and legs if you use arm or leg warmers (cycling garments), it keeps the warmers from sagging.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Move over Kiehl's!!, March 29, 2006
By Elle (DC)
I've been using Kiehl's lip balm for about 5 or 6 years. No one could convince me that ANYTHING was better for my lips. I am definitely a lip balm snob. I even have a tin of Rosebud Lip Salve that is somewhere in this apartment. None of those matter now! I purchased the bag balm to get my feet ready for summer...and now I use it for everything! Lips, heels, elbows, cuts, burns, hands. This stuff is truly multipurpose!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for Everything, February 26, 2006
By Happy Mom (Florida)
This product is GREAT!! We have used it for the past 5 years on every member of our family. We purchased it for a bad case of diaper rash on our son. Since then we have used it for chapped lips, rashes, and dry skin. The smell is not the greatest but you can live with it since it works. My children now open up the can by themselves and put it on their lips after a cold day to ease the pain from the cold and wind.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Stuff, July 29, 2008
By Umbasa (Los Angeles, Ca)
This product is nice for my English Bulldog. His nose usually looks cracked because they lick alot and the toungue passes over their nose all the time, so it get's dry and cracked. I tried this product on his nose and within a week I noticed it was a more natural black is the best way to describe it and it now looks and feels softer.

I put a light coating in the morning and later at night, and that seems to do the trick. Bag Balm is a very good product...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Spearmint oil improves the smell of bag balm, October 15, 2007
By Knittysong (New York)
I added a few drops of spearmint essential oil to about an ounce of bag balm and it improved the smell a lot! Especially nice if you use it as lip balm this way.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Backpacker's friend, December 9, 2005
By Adobe Community Professional..
I've been using Bag Balm for a year or so on my lips and hands. But recently, I had occasion to use it on my feet during a long hike. It's now a permanent part of my hiking gear, right next to the moleskin.

Keep a small tin in your pack for hotspots, small abrasions, lip balm, dry skin and nails. It works great for callouses on toes and rough spots on heels.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for chapped lips!, December 1, 2004
By G. Luehrs (Charleston, SC USA)
Bag Balm is absolutely fantastic - I have been using it, mostly for chapped lips, for over 10 years. Between the large container I keep at home and the small container for travel, I am always well equipped. It also works well on very dry parts (knuckles, elbows, knees, feet) in the winter. Once you get past the unique smell and texture, it quickly becomes a favorite!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Product, Bad Stains, October 5, 2009

I tried this to heal some abrasions from road cycling. It did an admirable job, but left deep, greasy stains on whatever I was wearing. I haven't been able to get most of them out.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  WOW! This stuff is the BEST for diaper rash!, April 24, 2009
By Samantha Evans (Easton, CT United States)
My 7 month old had horrible diaper rash. It was flaming red. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic cream, but after 4 applications, it was worse! I read so many great things about Bag Balm on the internet, I decided to give it a try. I was very skeptical. I started rubbing it on his sore hiney yesterday around 3pm. I put it on again at 6pm after his bath. I set my alarm and got up at 12:30am to change his diaper (the last thing I wanted was him to sit in a wet diaper) and I was shocked to see the diaper rash was about 80% better!! It looks better and better with each diaper change, and I am sure by tomorrow it will be totally gone. I thank GOD for this product. It truly works miracles! As far as the smell goes, it is a nice clean smell. The thing is, that it is a "natural" smell. If you are used to smelling chemically smelling soaps and laundry detergents, etc., you will probably find the smell repulsive. If you are really into organic, natural things, you will probably like the smell.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Magical, February 27, 2008
By J. Kettinger
At times, my hands crack and dry so severely that I wake up in the morning with blood stains on my sheets from them. This stuff seems to be the only product that provides relief to my chapped, cracked hands. I've started applying a very generous amount and covering my hands with socks to sleep. The next morning my hands are soft (and still wet from the Bag Balm as if I just applied it). I highly recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bag Balm Magic, January 27, 2008
By James H. McCain (Alexandria, Virginia United States)
We have used Bag Balm since the late 1950's. We discovered the healing effect of Bag Balm when using it on the udders of our cows in the field. They came to the barn with scratches and abrasions from the brambles and posts. We used Bag Balm and the healing was amazingly rapid.

We logically thought if it works for the cows, why not for us?

It works for us. It helps the dry skin of aging - it heals scratches and abrasions - all very rapidly.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Not just for cows anymore..., June 11, 2007
By Sugarcane (Pennsylvania)
BB is the best all-purpose salve around. Lasts forever if you buy the larger size and is good for rashes, burns, minor cuts & scrapes and esp. good to keep in the kitchen, which is where I usually end up needing it. Try it - you'll like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fantastic Product!, August 28, 2010
By Confidential
When I was younger I remember my Aunt using this stuff as a multi-function cure all remedy for just about any kind of skin dilemma her kids encountered growing up. This seller offered the best price for this size, so I decided to order some of this product for treatment of several different skin conditions I suffer from now that I'm in my 40's. This product arrived in record time, and works just as well as I remembered! My thanks to "EntirelyPets" for great customer service, speedy delivery, and a wonderful product!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love it!, February 21, 2008
By Stitchinjj (Southern New Mexico, USA)
I have used Bag Balm for about 20 years. I originally learned about it as a quilter friend told me to use it to help heal needle pricks. It is sold in Quilt Shops for that purpose. But my daughter was grooming pets and got me a large tin as it was cheaper than the little ones at the quilt shops. I use it on everything, but especially my heels and lips. In my dry climate, I use it daily. Like so many have said it works! It smells nice too.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Chafing issues from running/cycling? Use this., July 23, 2011
By Kikikins (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA)
I'm a triathlete, and have lots of issues with chafing from my sports bra and saddle. I use preventative treatments (Ho Ha Ride Glide, Butt Butter, Body Glide, etc), but after 20 miles, it tends to wear off. I can't afford to take time off for the chafing to heal, so I need a product that heals it fast. Diaper rash ointments work ok, but Bag Balm is my go-to product. It smells horrible, but my skin feels better within a couple of hours and I'm ready to go the next day. I keep the large jar at home and the small 1.0 oz jars in my gym and travel bags. This is the best there is for chafing - try it; you won't regret it!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Balm for the bags, not much else to say, May 29, 2011
By Tracy (Dallas Texas)
Ok maybe there is. First off. Somehow I got the impression I was getting a 10 ounce and a 1 ounce as well, but I just got 10 ounce. I got it for my feet, heels and it s amazing. Use liberally and apply socks all night. Seriously though, it STINKS bad but truly works. Everyone should have s tin, a ten ounce one by your bed. My mother swears on this stuff on her facial skin. I'm not ready for that but take that under advisement. She has aging skin and very little natural moisture left. I got ten years left in me.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  When I was a beatnik and a hippy..., May 6, 2011
By grindermonkey
I had a small dairy operation and milked cows every twelve hours without fail. This product is what I applied to the animal's "bag" to lubricate the hand milking process. Not only did the cow enjoy the experience but my hands remained healthy and strong through the entire day. Without trying to sound to bovine, I would recommend this to anyone with skin problems and you can use it on your critters too. Great preventive medication for a VERY reasonable price.

After reviewing several great options on Amazon for this product, I bought a 10 ounce with a 1 ounce travel container of Bag Balm. When I received the package the 10 oz. was all that was included-no explanations. The product is great. The seller I am not impressed with.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bag Balm, February 11, 2011

The Bag Balm has worked very well in healing and now preventing cracked skin around my thumbs (and fingers). My only complaint it is too greasy and cannot use it during the day as it would interfere with my work. I apply and rub it in before bed. It works as described!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The Miracle Worker for Everything, March 28, 2010
By BetteJean (Midwest)
I originally purchased Bag Balm for my tattoo healing, because I had an allergic reaction to A&D ointment and Bag Balm was suggested. It definitely worked with healing my tattoo. And then I started reading online about other people's uses for it. Here's what I've used it for so far:

* tattoo healing
* moisturizer for feet (and hands): put it on your feet before you go to bed, slip on some socks and your feet will be softer and smoother in the morning.
* acne: You can only do this 2-3 times a week because it's so greasy, but when my skin is breaking out really badly, I'll put a very thin layer on my problem areas before I go to bed and in the morning my really bad zits are more healed my tiny zits are practically gone and my skin is incredibly smoother.
* hair: I have bleach blond hair and there are times when it's like straw. Desperate to save my hair I put a thin layer on my problem areas and went to bed. Woke up in the morning and washed and conditioned my hair (you kind of have to rake the balm out of your hair with your fingers to get it out) and today it feels like actual hair and it's soft and silky feeling! Some people will put it on their scalp if they have really bad dandruff, but I used it on the ends of my hair.
* sores: My husband gets these odd sores on the back of his head that are in his hair. When they get really bad we put some bag balm on them and they are healed by the next day. This is the only thing that's ever worked for him.

Besides the greasy feeling and the medication smell (which isn't really that bad) this is my miracle worker for anything that is dry and needs healing.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best in Show, February 8, 2012
By Horse Lover
This stuff is AMAZING! I have very dry hands and a few fingers that are cracked from being outside and using my hands to work in the garden and with horses. The inside of my right thumb gets so dry that it cracks and sometimes bleed. I use this bag balm on my very dry spots in the morning and at night and within 2 days I saw a remarkable difference. It's very thick and greasy and it does have a medicinal smell to it, so you may not want to put it on & go out somewhere right away, but it does work! I use it on my feet and calluses also. At night I try to put it on my hands and feet and where gloves and socks to bed so that it can soak in overnight. It's really helped my hands feel better and look better.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  can't get past the smell, January 31, 2012
By Chris (Boston)
As one who suffers from seasonal dry skin, I thought I'd give this product a try. Man this stuff stinks... really. I can't use it durring the day, because of my occupation. I tried it in the evening before bed, but it stunk up my bed-sheets. Too bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great stuff!!, December 3, 2011
By KS (Sacramento, CA)
Yes, we use it on the farm, but it's also GREAT for dry hands, and other parts that're prone to dry out. I use it every night to keep my eczema-prone hands from becoming problematic, and to help heal other dry spots. It's strong enough to heal, and thick enough to stay on...a bit like Vaseline in thickness but much better for your skin.

Yes, it does have a strong smell, but it works. If you want something that doesn't smell, there're plenty of other options out there (Burt's Bees, Cornhuskers Lotion, Aveeno, etc.).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best for Bottoms!, November 16, 2011
By ephwife (Wisconsin, USA)
My son is taking an antibiotic, and got diarrhea (a known side effect). He would cry if I just touched his bare, clean bottom. It was so red and inflamed. He is sensitive to the diaper rash creams widely available, which have often made his rash worse. So, I needed to find something else. I read about this through an internet search and decided to give it a try. Less than 24 hours later the inflammation in completely gone, the redness is only slightly present; even though the diarrhea continues. So, the Bag Balm soothed his bottom before the diarrhea even stopped! Amazing! He's happy and this Momma is thrilled!
