This new edition achieves everything the editor has outline in the preface, ". . . a detailed overview of periodontal theory . . ." through ". . . a survey of exiting (influential) articles on dentistry, specifically periodontics and oral diagnosis." The variety of articles is excellent. The five-part organization of the text: Diagnosis, Therapy, Occlusion, Inflamation, and Healing and Repair is further subdivided and presented in excellent style by the 31 authorities who are widely recognized in the field of periodontology. As the title, "Periodontal Therapy, A Review" would suggest, the contents are heavy with the treatment phase of periodontics. This coverage is particularly good, since a second volume devoted to diagnosis is planned. The references at the end of each article are worth the price of the book. Most of the nearly 400 illustrations are excellent quality reproductions including photo-micrographs, clinical photographs, line drawings, and artists' sketches. The major portion of the text consists of articles about periodontal therapy including those on home treatment; splinting and minor tooth movement; presurgical treatment; and various surgical techniques, including flap procedures, osseous surgery, and infrabony pocket elimination. Nomenclature use in the diagnosis of periodontal disease, occlusion, inflammation, and healing and repair are also presented. The value of this book as a review, reference, and teaching text (particularly for pos-graduate and graduate students in periodontology) can be seen at a glance.
