This book, written and arranged for the general practitioner by a practitioner, takes a conservative approach to periodontal disorders. It is a source of information for the orthodontist who is treating more and more adult patients with various stages of periodontal involvement. Stressing the need for recognition and interception to avoid later and more refractory aspects of the disease, the book outlines a number of techniques essential for successful treatment. Many of these can be employed during the wearing of fixed appliances. A large part of the book (eight out of sixteen chapters) is devoted to occlusion because of the author's belief that occlusal trauma plays a significant etiologic role in periodontal disease and therapy. The chapter on bruxism and its control will appeal to those involved in treatment of TMJ disorders. Book production details are excellent, with a wealth of color illustrations. Orthodontists would benefit from a thorough reading of the volume and it could be used in their operatories as an active "how to do it" source for both soft- and hard-tissue control during tooth movement.
