A book without a very good message, September 26, 2011

I'm reviewing this book for a class, so I haven't actually read it to any children.
This story seems to have a very interesting message. On one hand, Crocus starts thinking that he is just a giant earthworm when he looses his teeth, which leads all the animals to taunt him and think he is a giant earthworm too. This can show that what we think of ourselves is how others perceive us. However, his problem, the lack of respect create by his bad attitude and missing teeth, is solved by replacing the thing he lost, namely, his teeth. Once the farm animals see that he has his great teeth back again, they immediately respect him. It seems that the message of the story focuses more on the concept that looks matters more than actual friendliness or personality, even if Crocus says at the end that we all need something to make us special.

Crocus lives on a farm with Mr. and Mrs. Sweetpeas and all the other farm animals and he rules the land with his sharp teeth. When he gets a toothache and has to have ALL of his teeth removed he is, to say the least, despondent. When Mr. Sweetpeas realizes that the other farm animals are losing respect for Crocus, he has the dentist make four long rows of special sharp teeth and Crocus visits the dentist to have them put in. When he returns to the farm, he has gained back the respect and trust of all of his friends and once again becomes the "lord of the farm"! Another wonderful Duvoisin story that stands the test of time, Crocus is a colorfully illustrated and basically wonderful story for all of us who have something that makes us special.
