 Don't buy waste of time and money, October 18, 2012

I am a professional acupuncturist from Germany.
Because the book is cheap I thought I buy it because there is not much you do wrong spending so little money on an acupuncture book. I thought it will contain at least some useful information especially since there is not much literature on facial / beauty acupuncture and there is not a single book in German yet. But it is a total waste of money.
Here are some details of my critic:
- Let me begin with the most obvious annoyance: The book has 65 pages. At the end of the book 7 pages are left blank. The author argues this might be useful to take your own notes. If I want to take notes I will use some other paper, I do not need to purchase a (printed) book for it.
- The style of writing is in an anecdotical manner. Throughout the book the author continously is using "I"-sentences. The book is full of the author's personal stories, anecdotes and opinions which are very often not bolstered by deeper theoretical references to western or oriental medical theory and practice. Two examples from the book: 1) P.18: "LI4 He Gu (Joining of the valley) this is propably my favourite Acupuncture point; I find I use it in so many of my treatments." 2) P.13: "Some students have asked me about using before and after photographs, this is not something I do myself but I have no real problem with it either, I will leave it up to you." This is the average kind of comment you will find all over the book. It seems like the author is not able to write at the academic level which should be the standard for a medical topic.
- Of the 65 pages the section about the facial procedure is only 30 pages. Also in these 30 pages another 11 are about acupuncture anaesthesia. This is totally irrelavant information in the context of facial rejuvenation acupuncture. So out of 65 pages only 19 are really about the book's topic.
- About the authors facial enhancement procedure: The author reports he has developed this procedure by himself. He describes a standardized procedure of combining systemic acupoints with local acupoints in the face, and facial massage. First step of the treatment is in the author's words using acupoints for "detox". At no part is is explained why this detoxification is needed for facial treatment. Also in my view the explanations for choosing the particular points are extremely superficial, I might say poor. Example (p.17): "St36 Zu San Li (Leg Three Miles) A very important point, a lovely enriching point for Mind, Body and Spirit." (Spelling directly from the book). Another example is the use of ST44 in combination with LI4 where the authors mentiones that this combination can be used with teeth extractions. It goes on like this. Thus, I am missing any detailed rationale for choosing the points for facial treatment. A general theoretical framework for his procedure is also missing. Regarding the fact that this procedure is self-developed, not properly referenced in oriental medical theory, unsystematically described and with too short coverage of details in treatment procedure I would recommend to stay away from it.
Don't buy this book. I would recommend you one of the few better sources on facial treatment like A Comprehensive Handbook for Traditional Chinese Medicine Facial Rejuvenation.

Excellent Pocket Guide for Cosmetic Acupuncture, June 21, 2010

This is an excellent guide to cosmetic acupuncture mainly made for acupuncturists. This is good enough to get your feet wet at first. Interestingly enough it caught my attention when it mentions the utilization of electro-stimulation in facial acupuncture. Compared to other seminars I have received, it is much cheaper in terms of cost. I do expect from the author, Paul Adkins, Lac, an extensive version of cosmetic acupuncture book in the future though. It will tell you which kind of needles to be used, what gauge, what cream, point locations, necessary document templates, duration of treatment time, graphics showing point locations and application of needles in total of 61 pages. If I might add, it will be good to include herbal formulas. Overall, it is compact and well thought out book.

I was so disappointed in this book! It is the most poorly written book I have ever read, which turned me off from the beginning. It doesn't give the reader confidence in the practitioner if he is unable to clearly express his ideas. Of its short 44 pages of information- not including bibliography and so on- 12 pages(more than a quarter of the book!) were focused on anesthesia acupuncture. While that's interesting in its own right, I didn't buy this book to learn about anesthetic properties of acupuncture. Of the less than 20 pages dedicated to the actual practice of facial acupuncture, the information was fairly useful. But I was so irritated with the content and writing by then that I barely cared how good Dr. Adkins' information was. I sadly found this book a waste of money.
