Product Description:

"This book is a timely addition to texts on facial pain, written by a well-known author in the field of Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN). In particular, it is the first text to bring together the key themes of orofacial pain in an accessible form for patients and undergraduate dental students. The text is divided into 12 chapters that follow each other in a logical clinical fashion.

Chapter 1 covers the presentation and diagnosis of TN; chapters 2 and 3 outline the fundamental anatomical principles and epidemiology of TN. Chapter 4 deals with the investigations and chapter 5 evaluates how best to optimise patient care. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the medical and alternative methods of managing TN. Chapters 8 and 9 address the decision-making strategies and surgical management for TN. Chapter 10 addresses the recurrence and complications and chapters 11 and 12 discuss the importance of support groups and relevant research questions."

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for patients with TN and their loved ones, September 01, 2014

Pretty good information. I have trigeminal neuralgia, so it was particularly interesting to me. But the truth is, they just don't know a lot about the disease so a lot of this is conjuncture, or based on the best medical evidence available at the time of publictation. Has some very good brain pictures showing exactly what cranial nerve is affected and where it runs through the skull and on the face, An interesting read, though I can't imagine that many people would be interested in the subject. But if you have TN or a family member with TN, this book can provide information and support you may be looking for.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  If you can buy only one get "Striking Back..." instead, December 15, 2008
By Wilson
A disappointing book with so many grammatical and typological errors that one wonders how it made it through editing. In some cases the mistakes are clinically significant and potentially confusing unless one already knows some of the material. There is not much that is new here, a primer of what can already be found online. In some ways it is worse than searching online because there is no index. It's impossible to find the areas of particular interest, such as the latest medication to try. For those uncomfortable with internet searching I recommend one of the other titles.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Treatment overview and summarized stories, January 19, 2008
By ceejay
For treatment information and patient experience overviews this is a very good book. If you are looking for one person's story of life with trigeminal neuralgia and the personal day to day struggles to overcome it I recommend Carol Jay Levy's A PAINED LIFE, a chronic pain journey, characterized by the American Chronic Pain Association as "hard to put down." and by Stephen Hall, A NY Times magazine writer, as "A fascinating story, honestly told and courageously lived."

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Information, insight, facts, and feelings., August 30, 2007
By Kathy A. Gilbert
In one book, Dr. Zak has created a treasury of practical information for people with trigeminal neuralgia, neuropathic facial pain, and anesthesia dolorosa. From cover to cover, this book is full of practical hints about pain management and facts about diagnosis and causes of neuralgia, medications, surgical treatments and more. Recent statistics about surgical procedures are included. What I like most of all about Insights is that Dr. Zak presents psycho-social information about living with facial pain. Readers will find that they are not alone, but that they have much in common with other people who have facial pain. Truly insightful!
