Product Description:

The answer to all of your questions about the pacifier and the thumb!

"If your child is 'hooked' -- if you can't get that pacifier or thumb out of his mouth - then this informative and charming book is a worthwhile resource. I say this as a doctor, a journalist, and as the mom of a former 'pacifier addict'. It certainly is a must-read for every parent and care-giver."
— Dr. Ranit Mishori, Contributing Health Editor, Parade Magazine.

Does your child have an obsession with the pacifier or thumb and crave it like you crave your morning coffee? If you are looking to make a clean break, this book will give you the solution.

Pacifiers Anonymous is written by three moms whose full-time jobs are perfectly suited to this book: one is a medical doctor, one is a child psychologist, and one is a stay-at-home mom. The book takes a "from-the-trenches" approach with twelve easy steps to help your child kick the pacifier or thumb sucking habit for good.

This book will finally answer your most pressing questions:

  • Is your child ready to ditch the thumb or pacifier? Know the surefire signs to watch out for.
  • What can you do instead? Discover the technique that's best for soothing your child.
  • What are the most popular techniques out there to get rid of the pacifier or thumb-and what really works?
  • Is it really so bad to use the pacifier? (Rest easy: there are actually some benefits!)
  • Did cave babies suck their thumbs?

Learn the comforting truth about the history of pacifiers and thumb sucking.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Very few tips on thumbsucking, March 03, 2014
By Storm mama
The book is broken into 12 short, easy-to-read chapters. Much of the book was the history of the pacifier and why kids have sucking habits. It talks about different cultures and whether to start your child on a pacifier or allow them to suck their thumb.

All in all they make you feel like your aren't alone with the sucking habit. Most of the tips and information are about pacifiers rather than thumb sucking. The tips they gave about how to actually stop the habit were things I've heard or seen online including multiple ways of bribing the child and waiting it out. Some of the details about deciding when to stop are good. And there was good information on how to prepare others in your child's life.

The thing I really wanted the book to tell me is a PhD, PsyD's opinion about whether it is mentally healthy to force a child to stop a sucking habit, or if that is something the child needs to lead. Aside from mentioning that waiting it out is an option, I didn't see that they offered an opinion about what is healthiest psychologically. (Although they did talk about not making the child stop at particularly stressful times.)

I feel a better book about thumb and finger sucking habits is "Helping the Thumb-Sucking Child" by Rosemary Van Norman. She is an oral-facial myologist and concentrates on ending the habit while keeping the child's self esteem in tact. Although that book also left me with some questions at the end.

This book is so helpful to parents who can't find a way to help their toddler part with their pacifier. Very useful to new parents to take away frustration and get great advice.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  could take it or leave it, June 26, 2011
By evrythng4mykids
This book was okay but basically it is different points of view telling you their different opinions (with some research references) regarding the use of pacifiers or thumb sucking. It was interesting to read others opinions but wasn't really useful if you were looking for advice on how to wean children from the pacifier or thumb. It was okay. I probably wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Easy to read and makes sense!, January 16, 2011

I got this book because my 18 month old will NOT shake the paci (in fact, he grows more fond of it every day). This book was perfect for me as a busy mom of two boys. It was easy to read--no extra info I didn't need--and there are lots of 'tips' throughout--making it easy to skim when you're exhausted at night! The authors give lots of great suggestions and approaches for ditching the paci, and don't make you feel guilty for still using it. I've already started trying their suggestions and it's really helping! Def a must-read if you're ready to lose the paci once and for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Highly recommended!!, November 22, 2010

I am a mom-to-be and had lots of questions about the pacifier. Some of my friends with babies couldn't do without the binky and others tried their hardest to stay away from it. I thought this book was going to be totally anti-paci, but it's not at all. It pretty much goes thru all of the pros and cons of the pacifier and sucking the thumb and then tells you how to stop them if they are a problem. This book is a must have!

I bought this for a friend's baby shower and she love it! She is one of those ultra-prepared mom's who wants to have every parenting book. This was a hit.
