This second edition of a much praised and widely used reference manual on anatomic pathology has been extensively revised and expanded by 70+ international experts to cover the entire curriculum of anatomic pathology for a pathology residency training program, including molecular pathology, human genetics, electron microscopy, microbiology for surgical patho;ogists, transplant pathology, and cytopathology. In addition, the authors have incorporated recent advances in molecular pathology, cytology, and immunohistochemistry, adopted the new series of World Health Organization classification books, and used the 2002 TNM staging system and classifications throughout the book. Several new chapters on transplant pathology, the spleen, non-neoplastic skin diseases, the head and neck, the eye and ocular adnexae, the vulva and vagina, and the penis and scrotum significantly expand the book's coverage. The 2000+ new black-and-white images added to the text are also available in full color on a companion CD-ROM packaged with each book. The comprehensive, evidence-based practice information is presented in an outline format that is clear and easy to follow.

Useful for the images and charts, February 05, 2014

This text is useful for looking up additional images and charts for AP issues. However, Differential Diagnosis is clearly superior for surgical pathology quick reference. Essentials is an enormous book (it should probably be 2 volumes instead of 1) and is not portable by any stretch of the imagination. Since each chapter is written by a different author, there is a wide variation in the quality of the text. Some chapters have very helpful charts comparing diagnoses while others are poorly thrown together outlines. The only advantage this book has over Differential is the addition of forensic pathology and cytopathology review chapters. However, I still would recommend Differential over this book. If you can find a good deal and would like a giant AP book to keep at your desk, or just a book large enough to bludgeon intruders with, this would be an acceptable purchase.

A good reference, with A MAJOR flaw, April 23, 2013

The book is overall useful and the updated edition has color pictures that are generally good. Be warned that basically all of the endocrine chapter photos (about 90 photos in chapter 20) are incorrect (the photos DO NOT go with the captions and it is very difficult to determine what the pictures actually are). I contacted the publisher but they have no plans to update the chapter. This is a pretty egregious mistake for a $200 book; they could easily correct the chapter and allow purchasers access to a correct ebook.

Kindle version badly done, May 18, 2012

I can't say much about the actual book yet, since I only downloaded the kindle version a couple of days ago, but what I can say is that the kindle version is seriously lacking. The formatting is all screwed up, tables are split between pages in wierd places and are too wide to be displayed on the page properly so you have to use a scrolling mechanism which makes them very hard to read. In addition, Amazon makes it impossible to read on any other apps or devices but their own, so I am forced to use the kindle app on my ipad which is clunky and awkward when it comes to taking notes, bookmarking, and highlighting. If I'm reading a novel, that's one thing and the kindle app is fine. For textbooks, the app is simply inadequate. On the up side, figures and tables are linked as is the table of contents (as long as you bookmark that page and go back to it every time you want to jump to a new chapter). Although technically functional, for the more than $150 I spent on this book I expected a higher quality product, and I'm very disappointed.
