Works but overpriced, October 21, 2009
By Ramkumar Balaraman (Boston, MA)
|

Got this when I had to carry 2 semi-hard-shell suitcases on the roof of our Jeep Liberty for about 250mi from NY to boston. Used a tarp to wrap the suitcases rather than get a separate cargo bag. Used ratcheting straps hooked to the roof rails to hold the suitcases firmly against the roof. A corner of the tarp that was loose and flapping was tattered by the time we got home but it did protect the suitcases and was way cheaper than a cargo bag. I did debate putting the suitcases on cross-bars on the roof rather than directly on the roof, but the former would have given much greater wind resistance.
The mat held up well and there was not a single scratch to the roof of the car. Having said that, however, this was very similar in construction to the rubber shelf liners you get at wal-mart for much, much cheaper. You could get a pretty wide roll for less than half the price of this, fold it into 2 layers for greater protection, and still have a lot of the roll left over to line up shelves at home.
I admit to not knowing what to expect, but this just felt too overpriced for what I got. 1/8-inch thickness isn't exactly what I would call 'super thick' either.

Roof mat, July 8, 2009
By Kristina L. Beall

UPDATE:7/10/09 To anyone that wants to know this goes under the roof bag to keep it from sliding and scratching your roof. The bag we bought had no padding under it this was perfect. It is made out of the stuff you use in your camper or in the cabinets to keep things from moving around. It is of course is much thicker. I was very pleased with it and would buy again if I ever needed one.

Works Well, December 21, 2010
By Call me Kevin (North Carolina)

UPDATE - Try not to let the mat or your roof become wet prior to loading. The Sherpak becomes icy slick on your roof once it becomes wet!
The Sherpak SuperMat Roof Mat serves several purposes
1- It acts as a barrier to keep your roof from being scratched
2- It provides an *Anti-Slide* surface for your cargo bag/carrier - PLEASE NOTE - this mat becomes very slick if it becomes wet!
3- It helps to reduce (or eliminate) the possibility of wind getting underneath your cargo bag. This helps increase the safety and provide a modest improvement in gas mileage.
I am happy to report that the "SuperMat" preforms well in all of these categories. It is easy to put down... easy to store (Although it does have a strong odor when it is first purchased) and works as advertised.
Is it a bit expensive at the listed price. Well maybe... but it is not prohibitively expensive and it works. For me that makes it well worth the money!
5 Stars

Purchase with the Sherpak roof bag, August 23, 2009
By Stuff (California, United States)

This mat is similar to that squishy stuff that you put under rugs to keep them from slipping around. Same idea. I bought it with the sherpak roof bag because it was going to be flat on the roof of the car and I was concerned about scratching and movement. They worked beautifully together, we had no trouble with the bag slipping around and there wasn't a single scratch on the roof top.

Works but a little pricey, August 9, 2010

I worked to protect the car from damage from the carrier. But it is the same material you can buy to keep carpets from slipping. You can probably get similar material cheaper from a carpet store, Walmart, or a home store.

Sherpak Roof Mat, May 3, 2011

Used this mat under a Rain-X roof top bag for a 1,000 mile trip. Provided protection I was looking for (no scratches). Mat will move if/where wind lifts the bag. Ample size, folded extra under instead of cutting. Mat was like new at end of trip.

Good Mat, February 14, 2010

This mat fit my 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander well. It provided a good cushion for my luggage holder. It is very similar to drawer liners but is more convenient because the width is much larger.

North to Alaska!!!, June 14, 2011
By edkjanl (Grand Junction, CO)

I used the Sharpack Roof Mat with My Keeper car-top carrier on a recent trip to Alaska. It certainly helped keep the carrier solidly in place but its chief advantage was after two and a half weeks of continuous use in all kinds of weather including a blizzard in Yellowstone and steady, hard rains in Montana and southern Canada, the Sherpack was dry and the roof totally unmarked or scratched. The Keeper and Sherpak make an absolutely great combo. I would not use one without the other.

This mat was great. I used it with the "Keeper 07203 Waterproof Roof Top Cargo Bag - 15 Cubic Feet" because it was suggested by amazon. I used it on trip from Seattle, WA to southern CA and I'm glad that I got it. It was the perfect size.

I had a very heavy load to carry cross country and it wouldn't fit in the trunk. I purchased this mat along with a 15 cu-ft storage bag...and hand in hand there wasn't a scratch on the roof of my Volvo S70. Great buy and incredible price!

Excellent product, November 1, 2010
By Chad J Stringer

Bought this to put under a soft pack for a 1800 mile road trip. Worked great. Kept the bag from scratching the top of the vehicle. Also keeps items from slipping. Slightly oversized, and we could have cut it down a bit, but decided to just roll it under in the event we purchase a new vehicle of a different size/shape. Would definitely recommend for any/all soft sided carriers.

Works well, except when wet..., February 6, 2012
By Linden (TN)
|
|
Like some other reviews have stated, this works well when it's dry... but becomes slippery when it gets wet. After things are cinched down on it though, it seems to work fine. Either way it protects the delicate paint on the top of your vehicle, so I'd say it's worth the $ just for that. Yes, it smells a little funky when you first take it out of the package, but it's going to be outside your vehicle, so who really cares? It airs out pretty quickly and doesn't smell "plasticky" after a couple of days.

I needed this with the cargo carrier I purchased, never slipped around on top of car. Will keep this for as long as it stays together. I loved everything I got from Amazon for our 2,600 mile trip.

does the job!, June 30, 2010
By k-dub-barker (waxhaw, NC USA)

like other reviews i've read, it is very similar to a piece of slip guard or rug mat. i do think it's a little bit heavier duty. did the job perfectly on a 450 mile trip and a 350 mile trip recently. i would buy it again and i wouldn't pay over 25-30$ for it.

We put this under the Keeper 07203 Waterproof Roof Top Cargo Bag - 15 Cubic Feet for a vacation. If fit perfectly under that cargo bag and kept the car scratch free and also prevented the cargo from moving at all.

You can get it cheaper, July 15, 2011
By Take my advise

The roof mat seems fine but it looks and feels like the antiskid mats that you would use under your carpets. i could have gotten the same material at joblot or any other discount store for less than half the price. It may be a little thicker but not enough to make a difference.

Just as advertised, July 2, 2011
By Barbara (Eugene, OR, United States)

Product was just as advertised. We didn't end up needing it for a roof mat, but instead we ended up using it as an extra layer under our sleeping pads in our tent. It worked great to provide a little extra insulation and padding. I'm sure it would work well as a roof mat, too!

Roof mat for car carrier, March 19, 2011

Really protected top of car. Easy to install, stays in place by friction. I wish it was about 2 inches longer so that it would be under my carrier rods completely.

The mat did the job required. We did not experience any sliding or slipping with the Thule Tahoe luggage bag packed full on top of your Ford Explorer. Did not price it out but this product is very similar to a rug mat. Worth pricing this out before buying.

This mat fit the top of my 2012 Hyundai Tucson perfectly. It doesn't move and didn't crack in the 20 degree Pittsburgh weather I left it out in all weekend. The cargo bag never shifted which was due to a combination of factors, including this mat.

Great fit and very sturdy, July 27, 2010
By SMT (Watkinsville, Ga United States)

We recently purchased and used the SuperMat Roof Mat. It did the job, providing traction and a bit of cushion between the Highland luggage carrier and the roof of our 2005 Honda Pilot. We used it for a 20+ hour round trip from Atlanta to the NC Outer Banks in 95+ degree weather and torrential downpours. I'd recommend this to prevent scratches on the roof as $18 is much cheaper than resurfacing your roof and it appears that it will last a long time.

Product us good but wrong size, December 27, 2011
By Robert

The product is good but they sent me the wrong size. I ordered 47" W x 38" D, but when I recievied it, it says, 45" W x 38" D. Since it still fits my Cargo bag, I didn't bother to return it. But be aware of it.
