This is the 20th monograph in the Craniofacial growth series. A general introduction to 'Growth at adolescence' by Professor J. M. Tanner is followed by two papers on endocrineology. A paper on 'Pubertal growth and orthodontic treatment' by Hagg et al is a useful review of the work recently published by these authors in the literature and is obviously an essential contribution to this theme. Baumrind, in a well-reasoned contribution, points out that most orthodontic treatment has to operate within a framework of uncertainty of the amount an timing of facial growth, and clinicians must develop strategies to minimize the risks of disadvantage to their patients when growth is not as expected. A number of other contributions deal with different aspects of the main theme to give a volume that, while it reports little that is new, serves very usefully to bring together various aspects of craniofacial growth during adolescence. It deserves to be read thoughtfully by all orthodontists.
